Highland Park Shooting Response
and Recovery Funds Overview

In the immediate aftermath of the tragic July 4, 2022, shooting in Highland Park, the Highland Park Community Foundation (HPCF) established the Highland Park Shooting Response Fund. This Fund provided a charitable vehicle to support victims, assist nonprofit organizations serving impacted residents in Highland Park, Highwood, and surrounding communities, and help the Cities of Highland Park and Highwood by alleviating burdens on governmental services.

The Response Fund closed on October 7, 2022. Shortly after, 100% of the donations received were distributed: $5,225,102 to victims who suffered physical injuries and the families of those killed, and $580,025 to community organizations addressing the mental health impacts of the shooting.

On October 8, 2022, HPCF opened the Highland Park Shooting Recovery Fund to support grants for nonprofits addressing the ongoing needs of victims and the broader community. Over the next two years, HPCF distributed $494,500 to support recovery efforts.

By the end of 2024, donations to the Recovery Fund had significantly decreased, making it no longer sustainable to maintain a separate Recovery Fund Grants program. However, the HPCF Board of Directors recognized that many individuals continued to experience the lasting effects of trauma and still needed mental health and recovery services.

Effective January 1, 2025, HPCF integrated support for recovery-related services into its Annual Grants Program. This ensures that both victims and the broader community continue to receive the support and services they need.
